The
Early Head Start program provides comprehensive child
development and family support services to low-income
families with children under three and pregnant women.
The Early Head Start program is the product of bipartisan
legislation signed into law by President Clinton in
May 1994 with the reauthorization of the Head Start
Act.
The
program is designed to provide services that create
an environment that builds upon and responds to the
unique strengths and needs of each child and family,
including: developmentally appropriate activities for
infants and toddlers (both in and out of the home),
home visits (especially for families with newborns and
other infants), parent involvement (including parent-child
activities), comprehensive developmental and health
services (including services for women prior to, during
and after pregnancy), nutrition, and ongoing support
to parents through case management and peer support
groups.
Early
Head Start services is provided in the ALPI George W.
Truitt Family Services Center located in Ft. Pierce,
Florida.
